Today we will complete our study notes and learn about the process of creating a Rube Goldberg machine

Jan 10

Today we completed our study notes on how structures fail and designing with forces.

Jan 9

Today we discussed our Rube Goldberg Winter Science Fair project. We will be having a class demonstration on how to build Rube Goldberg machines on Wednesday and we will begin planning in our groups on Thursday. On Friday, we will start building our machines. Please bring in

We started discussion and study notes on "How Structures Fail"

Our Topic 5-7 quiz will be next week after our Rube Goldberg presentations.

Dec 21

Today we reviewed for our Science Quiz tomorrow!

Dec 20

Today we will review for our Topic 3 and 4 Quiz on Mass, Weight, Forces, Shear, Compression, Tension, Torsion and Bending.

Dec 19

Today we wrote our Topic 4 Study notes on Shear, Compression, Tension, Torsion and Bending. Our Unit 4 Topic 3 and 4 quiz is Dec 22

Dec 15

Today we worked on our Building Big interactive lab on forces

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/lab/forces.html

Dec 14

7k completed the Stressed Out Marshmalllow lab

7t worked on finding examples of compression, tension, shear and torsion

Dec 13
Set up decorations for Christmas concert and spent extra time working on our math probabilty presentations.

Dec 12
Today we prepared our study notes on mass, weight, and gravity

I found a very cool link to an applet where you can calculate your weight on other planets! Haven't you always wanted to do this?

Today we prepared for our Christmas Concert

Dec 7
7K Today we will write our Topic 3: Mass and Weight study notes
Check out this video!

7T Tody we will work on our Mass Mania and Wonderful Weight Lab

Dec 6

7K Today we will be using the 16 page booklets we made from a single piece of paper (thanks to Amy for finding the youtube link that taught us this cool little book). We will be working on our Mass Mania Wonderful Weight lab and measure the mass of objects in the classroom using a balance. We will convert our measurements to kilograms and then use that value to estimate and calculate the weight of objects on earth.
7T Today we learned how to use balances and learned how to convert grams to kilograms.

Dec 5

Today we learned about the difference between mass and weight. We found out that Mrs. Kidd has a mass of 63kg and her weight is about 600N! Students also measured their mass and determined their weight.

Dec 2

Today we learned about forces. We learned about gravity and Sir Isaac Newton. We also discussed Einstein's theory of gravitational pull.
We learned about how to measure force using spring scales.
Dec 1

Today we wrote our Topic 1 and Topic 2 quiz on structures. Please make arrangements to write your test as soon as possible if you were absent today.

Nov 30

Today we reviewed topic 1 and 2 for our quiz tomorrow.

Nov 29

Today we finished our topic 2 notes and began reviewing for our quiz on Thursday.

Nov 28
SCIENCE QUIZ FOR TOPIC 1 and 2 has been postponed until Thursday...thanks for the great examples and discussion in class. Your sharing of ideas helps us make real life connections to the concepts we are learning.

7K Today we completed our Topic 2 notes and discussion on Describing Structures. Next day we will be working on a Topic 2 Review sheet and then we will be studying for our quiz on Thursday.

7T Today we learned about joints, laminations, fasteners and adhesives. We will be completing our Topic 2 notes on Describing Structures next day.

Nov 25 - Reminder: Topic 1 and 2 quiz coming up next week! Planned for Wednesday Nov 30.
7K and 7T - today we will work towards completing our Topic 2 notes and discussion. Next week we will begin reviewing for our Unit 4 - Topic 1 and 2 quiz.

Nov 24

7K and 7T today we will continue with our Topic 2 notes and discussion on describing structures: We discussed margin of safety, joints, fasteners and laminations.

7K Today we will begin our Topic 2 notes and discussion on Describing Structures.
Reminder: I have found some pretty cool videos links for this describing structures lesson but if you find something even better...
post it on our wiki somewhere and we can show it and discuss your find in class!

7K Today we will continue to work on our Topic 2 worksheet that we began with our substitute teacher yesterday.

Nov 22

7K - Today we will complete our Gold Ball Bridge Lab

Today we will practice classifying types of structures

We will analyze and compare a natural frame structure to a manufactured frame structure.

See page 275 in your textbook "Frame it Activity

Nov 8
Today we will be learning about different types of structures:
Natural vs. Manufactured structures
Frame Structures
Mass Structures and
Shell Structures

We will be using our knowledge of these structures in an egg drop challenge experiment where we design a structure to protect a raw egg as it undergoes a free fall due to the force of gravity.

Eggs-periment Handout:

Thinking outside the box for an egg drop challenge - you will love the creativity!

EGGS ARE STRONG!!!! links: we saw today that many of us just aren't strong enough to break an egg:)
